Greenwich high school student, Katherine Schultz, has created a four-minute video in which she stars providing young drivers with tips on safe and “green” driving, such as how to decrease your fuel consumption and emissions, how to keep your engine properly tuned, how to keep your tires properly inflated, and knowing when to stop unnecessary idling.  While the video was intended for young drivers, it is appropriate for all ages. 

Available on line, this video has also become a part of the State of Connecticut’s safe-driving protocol and her message is on the DMV’s website.  As Bill Seymour, DMV director of corporate and public relations who oversees the DMV Center on Teen Safe Driving, said, “This video is important for any driver to see, but especially for teens, so that they learn early about the need for environmental awareness when driving.  This informative, hands-on approach reflects Katherine’s hard work and dedication to raising awareness among teens”.

Goods for Good is an organization that uses surplus from our lives in the form of clothes, school supplies, and other necessities and recycles them to help orphans and vulnerable children in developing countries and to help reduce our waste.  Every day, Goods for Good promotes the physical, emotional and educational growth of thousands of children, primarily in Malawi, and ensures that a lack of basic materials is not a barrier to their achievement.

This Thursday night, the organization is hosting a cocktail reception at the Industria Superstudio in Manhattan with a photo exhibition of Andrea Tese’s work from her recent trip to Africa and a special musical performance.  Tickets are $200.

Christy Turlington Burns

Driven by curiosity after a labor-induced scare, model Christy Turlington Burns was stunned to learn that 1,000 women die each day and 500,00 die each year during childbirth.  Saddened by the harsh realities that many women have difficulty accessing the prenatal care they need and that 90% of these deaths are preventable, Burns was inspired to learn more about maternal health and has recently produced a documentary raising awareness for at-risk mothers-to-be.  In “No Woman, No Cry”, her directorial debut, she shares the poignant stories of at-risk pregnant women in four parts of the world, including a remote Maasai tribe in Tanzania, a slum of Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States.  Ultimately, Burns hopes that ”…through the universal experience of birth, we can help create a mainstream maternal health movement that ensures the lives and well-being of mothers worldwide, for generations to come.”
